Pole System Cleaning
Following a review of safe working practices on all sites we were forced to look
at alternative methods of cleaning windows above 2-story level .The current
use of ladders over 6 metres is restricted by guidance note GS25 issued by
the health and safety executive which we are legally required to adhere to.
Alternatives are the use of hydraulic platforms, fixed eyebolts or additional
staff being used to foot ladders. All of these methods result in increased
costs through equipment, time or staff levels and still do not guarantee the
safety of employees.
We have found an alternative method, which uses pure water fed through a telescopic
fiberglass pole incorporating a soft nylon brush head, which cleans both the
window and frame. This means the operative can remain on the ground at all times
The system was originally imported from America and already has proven track record in the UK. We have now purchased this system and have had a vehicle specially adapted to enable us to provide this service. The key to the system is pure water that is used. Pure water is pumped directly from a one thousand one hundred and fifty litre sealed tank fitted in one of our specially adapted vehicles.This water travels through fifty metre lengths of hosing, via telescopic fibre glass poles, to a soft nylon brush attachment. The window can then be gently scrubbed clean with a constant flow of clean water.
When applied to a window this pure water will constantly try to revert to its original form and absorb all chemicals, dirt and minerals it comes across. This process results in the water actively cleaning both the window and the frames. When untreated tap water dries the residue left consists entirely of chemicals and minerals. Because the impurities have been removed when using this method, the final rinse leaves the windows smear free.
It takes a period of time for the process to remove the build up of soapy residues and chemicals already present in both the frame and window which means best results are normally achieved after three visits.
The new system will generally allow us to reach more windows than conventional methods of window cleaning and stay within health and safety guidelines. The Health and Safety issues are a major driving force behind this system as well as having other significant advantages such as:
